PGI & Regionality

An Eco-Label rooted in respect: for soil, for nature, for people.

PROVEN LOCAL

Products must originate from the districts of Dahme-Spreewald, Oberspreewald-Lausitz, or Spree-Neiße.

PURELY TRADITIONAL

Our Regional Eco-Label guarantees that 70% of raw materials are grown in our local soil, preserving our traditions.

LOCAL KNOW-HOW

At least one essential production step takes place in the Spreewald region using local artisanal know-how.

PGI PROVES ORIGIN. THE SPREEWALD ECOLABEL PROVES RESPONSIBILITY.

The EU’s yellow-and-blue PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) seal on our well-known pickles may already be familiar to you. It is a mark of distinction that certifies the product follows an authentic and traditional recipe closely linked to its region. However, we believe it is important to go one step further in our wetlands.

While a PGI product guarantees the traditional method of production, it does not always fully ensure the origin of every single ingredient. This is where the Spreewald Ecolabel comes in. It is designed to be simple and practical for local producers, ensuring that key ingredients come from the Spreewald region while keeping certification clear and achievable. From the seeds grown in nutrient-rich soil to the final product in the jar, it supports local sourcing in a way that remains simple and practical for producers.

By selecting a product bearing our green seal, you are not only purchasing a brand but also supporting a local artisan, shaking hands with a farmer, and preserving the delicate equilibrium of our UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It's about more than just a snack; it’s about ensuring a sustainable, thriving future for the home we love.

PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is an even stricter EU label. It requires that everything is made entirely within one region, from start to finish, ensuring the strongest link to its origin.
